What is the impact of a Bicycle Empowerment Centre (BEC)?
•Access to affordable transportation
•Direct job creation related to the community-based bike shop
•Income generation to invest in community health, educational and economic development programs
•Education: Students can travel the long distances to school and still have energy left to learn
•Healthcare and access to medication: a health care worker can make at least 4 incremental visits to patients
•Improved productivity: ease of burden of everyday chores like fetching clean water and firewood
•Employment: access to a wide range of opportunities, not just those in walking distance
•Economic development: new opportunities are created (bike taxi, bike repair, delivery, etc)
•Economic improvement: existing businesses can flourish (example: farmers able to bring more goods, to further markets)
•Social opportunities: families, friendships, and communities are strengthened as access to transportation reduces distances
•Empowerment and liberation of women: freeing women from many hours a day walking and carrying allows them to spend that time productively: in many cases, to earn a supplementary income.
General economic improvement in the whole region as people become mobile
